Our Supplier of Viking Has Retired... Our Stock of Reeds is Gradually Going Away! We are gradually adding "Glimakra" reeds to fill in. Please note that the Glimakra reeds are either 4" tall or 4¾" tall and will be identified in the ordering chart that way.
"Pitch Reeds" are made using cord that's been dipped in 'pitch' (like tar) before wrapping it around half-round wood dowels to secure the metal stainless steel segments and provide the proper spacing by using different size cord and varied numbers off wraps to achieve the "dent" spacing required.
Viking Stainless Steel Reeds
We sell ONLY stainless steel reeds in many standard sizes. These "Viking" reeds are the standard 'pitch' reed used by many loom manufacturers for decades (Swedish made, lighter weight reeds, wrapped top and bottom with a pitch covered cord and then the cord is covered with a protective strip of silver tape) - ***these reeds are approximately ½" thick***. No Rust! ie. a 16" Ashford table loom uses a 16.75" reed. A 22" Norwood loom uses a 22.5" reed. A 26" Schacht Baby Wolf*** uses a 27"x 4.5" reed. A 36" Schacht or Harrisville uses a 37" reed. Most 45" looms use a 46.5" reed.
Special Caution for Schacht Loom Owners: A few years ago Schacht started supplying heavy duty reeds that are heavier and have plastic pieces installed on the top and bottom edges of the reed (see our "Special-Made Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Reeds"). . . at the same time, they changed the width of the bottom reed groove on the beater bar. When they did that, many 'pitch' reeds would no longer drop down into the bottom groove (A 'Pitch" reed is one constructed with a cord [covered with black 'pitch'] wrapped around the top and bottom parts of the reed). 'Pitch' reeds usually have a silver tape covering the top and bottom wrapped cord (as ours do). On a Schacht loom, if the reed groove is wider in the vertical arms of the beater bar than the groove in the cross bar in the beater bar. . . you 'probably' need to order the "Special-Made Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Reeds" on a different page.
If you would prefer a heavier duty reed for any loom, order the "Special-Made Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Reeds" on a different page.
