Alkanet Root: Roots of the plant Alkanna tinctoria. Gives burgundies and purples in an alkaline dyebath; color is enhanced by extracting in alcohol and adding solution of extract to premordanted wool or silk in dyebath. 1 to 4 oz dyes 1 lb of wool

Annatto Seeds: Seeds of the plant Bixa orellana, called achiote in Mexico. Gives orange- browns to golden yellows in an alkaline dyebath. Often used as a food coloring. Fair lightfastness.

Black Oak Bark, ground. Bright clear yellows, Orange, and Fiery Scarlet (3 recipes included with Black Oak Bark package.

Brazilwood Chips: Chips or "splints" of wood from the tree Hematoxylon brasiletto, a Mexican and Central American variety; mostly heartwood. Gives a variety of reds, including burgundies and purplish magentas, with different mordants and dyebath conditions. Extract color by simmering. You can extract more than once but later extractions will be weaker.

Cutch Extract: Prepared from the tree Acacia catechu; a good source of colorfast browns; contains tannin as well as dye compounds. The brittle resin is easily broken up into granules [which we have done], which are readily soluble in hot water. 3 to 8 oz to dye 1 lb of wool.

Fustic Heartwood: Shavings & Sawdust: Gives yellows & golds with all mordants

Henna Powder: Pure powdered leaves of the plant Lawsonia inermis; this variety is sometimes called "red henna". Gives red-browns with good colorfastness. 3 to 8 oz to dye 1 lb of wool.

Indigo, Natural (#1 quality): Extract prepared from the leaves and stems of cultivated plants of Indigofera tinctoria. We carry only the very highest quality available. 1/2 to 4 oz to dye 1 lb of wool.

Well, for years we were told by our supplier that '#1 Grade' was the highest grade available. But now we find ourselves in the position of having a cake indigo that is stronger (takes less to get the same depth of shade) than our '#1 Grade'. We are calling it "Professional Grade" for lack of knowing what else to call it. Quantities are limited - and I don't know if I can get it again.

Indigo, Synthetic: Fine powder, approx. twice as strong as the strongest natural indigo. Contains the same blue dye compound (indigotin) as the main dye component of natural, but prepared by industrial chemical synthesis. Color results may be slightly different from natural indigo. Recommended mainly for chemical vats; reported not to work in some kinds of fermentation vats (though not all). 1/2-4 oz dyes lb of wool

Kamala Powder: Mallotus philippinensis is a small tree native to southeast Asia. It’s fruit yields the dyestuff kamala, an orange powder which produces brilliant yellows and oranges on wool, mohair, and silk. Kamala powder will only dissolve in an alkaline solution (like a soda ash solution).
